Carl Michael Garrett

Services for Carl Michael Garrett, 78, of Tyler will be held on Saturday, August 17, at 2:00 PM at Stewart Family Funeral Home with Dudley Brookshire officiating. Burial will follow at Ingram Cemetery in Edom under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mr. Garrett, also known as C.M. or Mike, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2024 in Tyler. He was born November 27, 1945 in Tyler, to Dorsey S. Garrett and Ruth Calhoun Garrett. Mike grew up near Edom, Texas and graduated from Van High School and Tyler Junior College. He married his wife, Barbara Wilkins Garrett, on November 26, 1965 and was happily married for 58 years. After working at the Tyler Police Department from 1967-1972, he owned a welding company and then started Rose City Computing Systems in 1982. Many knew him as “Coach Garrett” because he enjoyed coaching numerous baseball teams for all three of his children and also for the church. He was very supportive of his children and grandchildren's activities and even was a band parent for many years. In addition to being a husband, father and businessman, Mike was always active in the work of his church at Patton Lane Church of Christ. He impacted many lives through the India mission work, especially with the orphans and destitute children. Mike loved all kinds of racing from drag racing with his brother, Jimmy, in the 1960’s to crew chief for the family #66 racing team from 1994-2005. He enjoyed traveling the country with the race team from coast to coast winning many races and forming lifelong friendships along the way. He is survived by his loving family including his wife, Barbara Wilkins Garrett; three children: Andy Garrett and wife, Kathy; Jon T. Garrett and wife, Keishia; Jennifer Roberts and husband, Gregg; six grandchildren: Keneishia Garrett; Joshua Garrett; Sydney Garrett; Faith Garrett; Lena Jones and husband, Jarmael; and Katie Weekley; two great-grandchildren: Emory Jones; and Judah Jones; one brother: Jimmy Garrett and wife, Nettie Earl; and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Wayne Garrett, Reid Garrett, Jerry Garrett, Buddy Garrett, Carl Lynn Garrett, Erik Gonzales, Joshua Garrett, Jarmael Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be James Goggans, Johnny Campell, David Allen, Randy Ortigo, Coy Ellis, Donny Ingram, Bob Sliter, Kevin Wilson, Greg Davis, Colby Tipton, Johnathan Saunders. Visitation is scheduled from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on August, 17, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Patton Lane Church of Christ for the India mission work (orphans and destitute children), 165 Patton Lane, Tyler, Texas, 75709.
