Alice "Lavona" Thorpe

Services for Alice “Lavona” Thorpe, 69, of Whitehouse, will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. in the Stewart Family Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at the Whitehouse Cemetery in Whitehouse under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mrs. Thorpe passed away Saturday, April 28, 2018 in Tyler after a long-fought battle with breast cancer. Lavona was born April 21, 1949 in Lamesa, Texas to Mamie and Val Sturgeon. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She married her best friend, Gary W. Thorpe, on October 16, 1971 in Abilene, Texas and they had 46 incredible years together. Lavona was a stay-at-home mom to her two children, Melissa and Bobby. She loved taking pictures of her grandchildren and flowers and doing many different types of crafts. She was always proud of her brother and all of his musical accomplishments. Lavona was a member of Rose Heights Church in Tyler. She served the Lord as long as anyone can remember. She never wavered in her faith and left a legacy that will be long lasting. Lavona was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Betty Hall, Barbara Martin, and Gloria Jean Sturgeon. She is survived by her loving family including her husband, Gary Thorpe of Whitehouse; her daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Brandon Parker of Tyler; her son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Dawn Thorpe of Tyler; and her brother and his wife, Lee and Kathie Sturgeon of Krum. She is also survived by three wonderful grandchildren, Dillon Thorpe, Emily Parker, and Callie Parker, and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jason Berry, James Daniels, Paul Fitts, Clint Sturgeon, Daniel Sturgeon, and Michael Thorpe. Honorary pallbearers will be David Thorpe and Greg Thorpe. The family would like to express their heart-felt gratitude to the care provided by the ownership and staff at Prestige Estates Memory Care and the caregivers from Legacy Hospice. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, in Tyler.
