Arnold Powell

Services for Arnold “Smokey” Powell, 73, of Tyler, will be held on Friday, April 1, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Stewart Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Denny Burris officiating. Burial will follow at Wood-Verner Cemetery under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Smokey went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 after a short battle with cancer. He was born October 16, 1937 in the community of Dixie to Henry B. and Martha Stevens Powell. He attended his early school years in the community of Dixie transferring to Chandler for high school. He was a starter on the Chandler Tiger Basketball team. Smokey attended Henderson County Junior College and served his country in the US Army as a Military Policeman and was stationed in Germany. He was a co-owner of P&P X-ray CO., and also a member of Martin Springs Baptist Church. To know Smokey was to like him and have a friend forever. He loved hunting quail and fishing with his best friend Charlie Tidwell. Smokey loved helping others and did this as a 33 year veteran of the Tyler Fire Department retiring several years ago. The men at the fire stations were true brothers to him. His children were the light of his life and no one loved him more than they. Smokey was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Kelly. He is survived by his loving family including children, Sonya Hamilton and son-in-law Keith, Tonya Reynolds and husband Dewayne and Greg Powell and wife Tammey; brother, James Powell and wife Barbara; grandchildren, Brooke Hamilton, Kerbi Smith and husband Jeremy, Hunter Franklin, J.K. Hamilton, Kyndall Powell and Lukas Powell; and by great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Hamilton. He is also survived by three half sisters. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Hunter Franklin, J.K. Hamilton, and Lukas Powell, sons-in-law, Keith Hamilton and Dewayne Reynolds, Fire Chief, Tim Johnson and Fireman Royce Daugherty. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Tidwell and the Tyler Fire Department. Visitation is scheduled from 6:30 – 8:30 PM on Thursday, March 31, 2011at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Hwy., Tyler, Texas 75703. If desired, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
