Charles Daniel Haas M.D.

Whether treating patients with cancer, riding a motorcycle, attending the symphony, or traveling the world, Dr. Charles Daniel Haas embraced every day and each opportunity with curiosity, passion, and commitment. Born in Kansas City, KS, on June 7, 1939, to Herbert F. Haas, PhD, and Oma E. Smith Haas, “Charlie” approached life with a ‘work hard/play hard’ attitude. Unfortunately, during his first attempt at college, he focused too much on the play hard part or as he put it “majoring in bridge”. After being “invited to leave” the University of Kansas (his words), he dabbled in jobs, eventually deciding his best path forward was education. He went on to graduate from Yankton College with straight A’s and applied to just one medical school – the University of Kansas (KU), of course. After earning his degree in medicine from KU, Charlie spent the next several decades specializing in treating patients with cancer while also teaching and conducting research looking for that elusive breakthrough that could cure those he treated. While he took his work very seriously, he also took his recreational pursuits seriously. Though he loved music, especially classical, jazz, and old-time rock and roll, his talents leaned to more mechanical skills. He loved working on engines and took pride in maintaining his own motorcycles. However, riding a few miles for pleasure wasn’t enough of a challenge. He made multiple cross-country trips on “Goldie” and “Black Magic” (yes, he named his bikes). Charlie challenged himself to complete 1,000 miles in less than 24 hours, becoming a proud member of the Iron Butt Club. Likewise, after securing his private pilot’s license, he further challenged himself to master aerobatic flying, enjoying the thrill of performing spins and barrel rolls. Charlie was a voracious reader and especially fond of science fiction. While he couldn’t travel in person to those fantastical worlds of books, he relished exploring, trying new foods, and learning about the customs of other cultures. He traveled to all 50 states, all 7 continents, and enjoyed time in dozens of foreign countries before embarking on his final adventure on August 2, 2026. Charlie leaves behind his fellow adventurer and beloved wife of nearly 40 years, Dr. Barbara Haas. He is also remembered by his children, Kim Jacomet, Kathy Haas, Dr. Dave (Diana Harker) Haas, Jason (Stacie Rosenzweig) Haas, Katie (Joe) Hewitt, and Dr. Maggie (Justin) Ruelle, along with 11 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, and sisters Sue Haas and Paula Haas. He was preceded in death by parents Herb and Oma Haas and grandson Michael Pickens. Charlie will be honored with a celebration of life ceremony on Friday, August 7 at 10:00 am at Stewart Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Gullicksrud officiating. Visitation begins at 9:00 am.
