Dixie Ann Lawson

Dixie Ann Evans was born February 25, 1938 in Gillette, Wyoming to Louise and Cletus Evans. Dixie was a cheerleader and drum major at Camel High School in Gillette, Wyoming. Dixie worked as a waitress and worked at the local movie theater in Gillette, Wyoming. The heavens were rejoicing as Dixie Ann Evans Lawson, age 75 passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at The Hospice of East Texas. Dixie was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Dixie was preceded in death by her mother Louise Schlattman and her father Cletus Evans. Dixie married the love of her life Tom Lawson, on September 3, 1954 in Gillette, Wyoming. Together they spent 59 years raising three devoted daughters and making a lifetime of memories as they moved from state to state and settled in Tyler. Dixie touched the hearts of all who knew her with her spiritual wisdom and her unconditional love. She had a passion for helping people and making life fun. Her favorite hobbies were shopping garage sales, estate sales, and antique stores. We all enjoyed her laughter and the crazy sense of humor that was so endearing. She loved spending time drinking coffee with her friends and family. She especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren and they loved their “Meme”. We all loved Dixie dearly and treasured the time we had with her. She will be greatly missed. Dixie had a servant’s heart. She was an active member of Green Acres Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and went on several mission trips. Dixie had a pantry in her garage where she kept lots of extra can goods and groceries. It was known as the “Dixie General Store.” She loved giving grandchildren, college boys, and those who were in need of groceries. She retired as an employee of the Texas Department of Human Services and she cut and colored hair at the South Park Beauty Salon. Dixie is survived by her loving family including her husband Tom, of Tyler; her three daughters and their husbands, Beverly and James Smith of Mount Ida, Arkansas, Debbie and Jim Stanford of Colleyville, and Velvet and Gregg Potter of Tyler; also her brother and his wife, Cletus Evans, Jr. and Ellie Evans of Troup; and her six grandchildren, Lawson Smith and Allison Smith, John Thomas Stanford and Staci Stanford, and Elizabeth Potter and Kelsey Potter. The family had a private family graveside service on December 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Tyler. Dixie and Tom’s nephew, Pastor Michael Ford officiated. There will be a Celebration of Life Service in her precious memory at the Green Acres Baptist Church Chapel on December 21, 2013 at 4:00 PM officiated by Lanny Bridges and Pastors, Dr. Paul W. Powell and Dr. David O. Dykes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials or gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Hospice of East Texas Foundation.
