Don Spann

On May 18, 2023, Horace Don Spann passed away at his home in Tyler, Texas surrounded by his loving family. Don, as he was known, was 89 years old. Don was born on September 22, 1933 in Longview, Texas to Horace Hubert Spann and Mittie Cleveland. Don was the second born of three boys, a brother to Elmo Gene Spann and Charles Hubert Spann. He grew up in Oil City, Louisiana where he attended and graduated Oil City High School. As a young man he enjoyed sports and was a hard worker. During this time, he met his wife Syble Spann. He was a veteran serving for eight years as a member of the United States Air Force. Don married Syble in 1954 and together have three children. Don later graduated from Kilgore College and worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone company for 36 years from where he retired. He had a love for the outdoors from hunting, to fishing, and later on golfing. He also enjoyed traveling in his retirement with friends and sharing his zest for life. He will always be remembered for his big heart and even larger laugh. Don’s biggest source of pride and joy was his family. He enjoyed spending time with each family member especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After every prayer said for a meal, Don would always repeat, “And God Bless all my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren” making sure to cast a wide net of his faith and love to his family. He is survived by his wife, Syble Spann of Tyler, Texas; children, David Gene Spann, Donna Ann Spann, Paul Hubert Spann; his brother, Charles Spann; seven grandchildren and their families; along with numerous great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Elmo Gene Spann. Don attended the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in the Diocese of Tyler and was an active member with this wife in the Wellspring Community. A Rosary for Don will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler. Burial will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Cemetery in Many, Louisiana under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.
