Donald "Don" Moore

A memorial service for Donald Moore (Don), 87, Tyler, is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 14, 2017, at Christ Church, Episcopal, Tyler with The Reverend Matthew Boulter officiating. Burial will be at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery, under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home, Tyler at 10:00 a.m. on July 14. Don Moore died July 10, 2017, in a Houston hospital after a brief illness. Don was born December 21, 1929, to Graham and Violet McRae Moore. At the age of 17, he began college at Arkansas College in Batesville, Arkansas, (now Lyon College). After his freshman year of college, he joined the U. S. Navy and served on active duty for one year. He transferred to the Naval Reserve and returned to college at Louisiana Tech University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. It was there he met Marjorie (Marge) Ann Kelly. Don and Marge were married forty-five years before she died in 1999. In 1952, Don began working at Core Laboratories, Inc. in Shreveport, La., analyzing core samples from oil and gas wells. He and wife Marge then transferred to Bartlesville, Ok., and, in 1956, they relocated to Tyler. For thirty-five years Don served in several capacities at Core Laboratories, Inc., including Manager of the Ark-La-Tex District; Senior Sales Representative for the Ark-La-Tex District; Manager of the Tyler office; Laboratory Supervisor in Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Assistant Laboratory Supervisor in Shreveport, Louisiana; and Field Laboratory Supervisor. He was selected as a sales instructor for Core Laboratories Advanced Sales Seminars. After retiring from Core Laboratories, Inc., Don became a private pilot, participated in various oil and gas drilling prospects, and began a second career in real estate. He specialized in commercial real estate and was responsible for builder marketing. His employers included McCain Realty, Ben Fitzgerald Realty, and Perry Hall Homes. Don was a member of Christ Church, Episcopal, Tyler; the Greater Tyler Association of Realtors; American Association of Petroleum Geologists; East Texas Geological Society; Dallas Geological Society; Shreveport Geological Society; American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers; and the American Petroleum Institute. He enjoyed traveling, reading, dancing, and sharing stories and jokes with friends and family. Don was most proud of his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews and loved spending time with them. Don was predeceased by three brothers, Malcom Eugene Moore, Owen Moore, and Maj. Gen. Walter John Giller, Jr., MD. Survivors include son, John Michael Moore of Shreveport, La.; daughter, Susan Moore Wescott and her husband William of Houston; grandchildren Joseph Francis Nistico III and fiancée Darcy Hannah Schmidt of Denver, Co., Thaddeus Moore Nistico and Margaret McRae Wescott, both of Houston. Nephews are Shelby McMillan Moore, David Owen Moore, MD, Steven Owen Moore, Joseph Owen Moore, the late Walter John Giller III and Jeffrey Daniel Whitaker. Nieces are Deborah Ann Killmer, Amy Giller Heyman, the late Heidi Giller Meadows, Mary Ann Giller Moore, Kathryn Whitaker Kapka and Julia Ann McLean. Don had many great-nieces and great-nephews and one special brother-in-law and friend, Robert Larry Whitaker. In late life, Don enjoyed loving relationships with Jean Bassett and her family for many years. The Moore Family wishes to express its gratitude for Don’s devoted caregivers for many months, Eva Bailey and Katie Jones of Tyler. Honorary pallbearers are James C. Dowdy, Mark Tarver, Trant Kidd, Leroy Sellers, Shelby Moore, David Moore, Steven Moore and Joseph Moore.
