Dorothy Sawyer

Services for Dorothy Mae Sawyer, 80, of Tyler, will be held on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 10:00 AM at Stewart Family Funeral Home's Chapel with Dr. L. Mike Bloodsworth officiating. Burial will follow in Athens City Cemetery in Athens, TX under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mrs. Sawyer passed away Monday, May 14, 2007 in Tyler. Dorothy was born November 24, 1926 in Eastland, TX to the late Willie Mack and C.P. Lovelace. She graduated from Athens High School and attended Pan American University in Edinburg, TX. Dorothy was a member and officer of the Daughters of The Republic of Texas, Charles G. Davenport Chapter in Tyler. Mrs. Sawyer was devoted to her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was a faithful Christian and for twenty years she taught primary grade Sunday School at the First Baptist Church in Edinburg, TX. Dorothy was a hospital volunteer in Edinburg accruing over 1,000 hours of service and was DECA Boss of the Year. After moving to Tyler in 1972, she became an active member of the Noonday Baptist Church in Noonday, TX. She was preceded in death by a son Steven Andrew Sawyer of Edinburg, TX; her parents, Willie Mack and C.P. Lovelace; and a sister Doris Wyrick. Dorothy was married to John R. Sawyer July 10, 1943. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, John R. Sawyer; daughter, Sandra Sawyer McLeroy of Huntsville; son, Tom Sawyer and wife Carolyn of Houston; four grandchildren, Lewis McLeroy and wife Lyle of Charlotte, NC, Richard McLeroy and wife Jennifer of San Francisco, CA; Lcpl. Jay Sawyer and wife Ashley of Marine Air Station, Yuma, AZ, and Julie Sawyer of Houston; two great grandchildren, Dalton McLeroy and Bryson McLeroy of Charlotte, NC; and two brothers, Joe P. Lovelace and wife Dot of Mineola and Willie Mack Lovelace of Oklahoma City, OK. The family will be receiving friends from 5:00pm - 7:00pm on Thursday, May 17, 2007 at Stewart Family Funeral Home; 7525 Old Jacksonville Hwy, Tyler, TX 75703. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Hospice of East Texas, The Northeast Texas Chapter, Alzheimer's Association, or the Memorial Fund Noonday Baptist Church.
