Dorthea M. Roach

Services for Dorthea Marlyn Roach, 92, of Tyler, will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Stewart Family Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mrs. Roach passed away January 4, 2013 under the care of Hospice of East Texas. She was born March 6, 1920 in Mt. Pleasant to R. and Lena Edwards Harkrider. Dorthea was lovingly known as “Nenaw”, “Nana”, “Grandma”, “Granny”, “Mama Roach”, and “D”. She was a giver and servant in many capacities to her family and her community. Dorthea was a member of Park Heights Baptist church for over 70 years and recently attended Pine Brook Baptist Church. Dorthea was featured in the November issue of Tyler’s “In” magazine as the oldest volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed volunteering her time and did so with Camp Sunshine (formerly the Soroptimist Club), Dixie Extension Education Club, as well as volunteering at many local nursing homes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Durward Roach; sons, Bill Roach and Butch Roach and daughter-in-law, Judy Roach. Dorthea is survived by her loving family including her daughter, Cheryl Roach of St. Charles, MO.; grandchildren, Brett and Missy Sumpter of Tyler, Lee and Christy Roach of Lindale, Matt Roach of Tyler and Jon and Shawn Roach of Neches. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Sydney and Dylan Sumpter, Bradley and Lindsey Roach and Preston and Sarah Roach. Visitation is scheduled from 3:00 –5:00 PM on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, in Tyler. If desired, memorials may be made to Camp Sunshine (formerly Soroptimist Club), 608 Pleasant Lane, Whitehouse, 75791; Meals on Wheels, 3001 Robertson Rd, Tyler 75701; or Hospice of East Texas Foundation, 4111 University Blvd, Tyler, 75703. "Nenaw's Homemade Sugar Cookies' Recipe 1 cup margarine, softened; 2 eggs; 2 cups sugar; 3 cups flour; 1 teaspoon baking soda; Cream margarine; add eggs and sugar and continue to cream. Mix 1 cup four and baking soda (continuing to cream.) Add the remaining 2 cups flour and cream well. Cover and let stand on the counter for one hour. The mixture will become thick. With floured hands, roll dough in walnut sized balls. Place balls on an ungreased cookie sheet some two inches apart. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. Remove the pan immediately! Yields 100 cookies.
