Funeral services for Edgar "Noie" Johnson will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Stewart Family Funeral Home with Rev. Bennie Portwood officiating. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 12, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler. Mr. Johnson died on Monday, March 10, 2008 at his residence in Tyler. He was born in Anniston, Alabama on November 4, 1917 to Christopher Lum and Rhoda Caroline Johnson. Mr. Johnson was inducted into the US Army on May 7, 1942. While in the service, he met Opal Ivy and they were married on November 16, 1942. After being honorably discharged, Mr. Johnson and his wife moved to Tyler and were residents here for 66 years. Mr. Johnson was employed at Tyler Pipe Industries and he retired in 1982 after 40 years. Mr. Johnson was an active member of Central Baptist Church in Tyler. He also loved to garden, fish, work on his farm, and ride his tractor. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He was a loving and devoted husband, dad and papaw. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Opal Johnson; his parents; three sisters, Bertha Payne, Modell Mitchell, Mabel Lindsey; and four brothers, Clarence Johnson, Jessie Johnson, Ira Johnson and Homer Johnson. He is survived by a loving family including two daughters, Barbara Stokes and husband Robert and Kathy Willis and husband Gary; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be James Byrum, Jr., Ronnie Byrum, Larry Ivy, Marshall Ivy, Kenneth Ivy, Gene Barrett, Ray Barrett, and Vanoy Tucker. Honorary pallbearers will be Peter Tamez, Trent Mattox and Tootie Fuselier. Memorials in honor of Edgar Johnson may be made to Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, Texas 75702.
