Goldie Laveta Phillips

Laveta Taylor Phillips of Tyler passed away on July 9th, 2013. Mrs. Phillips was born on October 15, 1922 in Burneyville, OK. She is survived by her daughter, Saundra “Cindy” Harvey and husband Sonny of Emerald Bay, daughter, Elna Curry and husband Jim of Tucson, AZ, son, Dan Phillips and wife, Pattie of Trinidad, TX, grandson, Coty Smith and wife, Tracy of Frisco, grandson, Ty Dan Smith and wife Hope of Lakeland, FL, grandson, Cimarron Curry and wife Deborah of Tucson AZ, grandson, Bo Curry and wife Julie of Tucson AZ, granddaughter, Nikke Cooke and husband Jim of Kilgore, TX, granddaughter, Amanda Mahaney and husband Adam of Richardson, TX, grandson, Daniel Phillips and wife Jamie of Fairfield, TX, seventeen great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter, and a large number of other loving and cherished family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer Gordon Phillips, her parents M.E. and Lovie Taylor, and six siblings. Laveta moved to Olton, TX from Oklahoma in a covered wagon when she was two years old, and graduated from Olton High School in 1940. She and Elmer married June 28, 1941 in Olton and soon after moved to Lubbock. In 1944 while Elmer was serving in WWII, Laveta and their two daughters moved back to Olton. That became the family home for the next twenty-two years and in 1951 their son was born. Laveta and all three children attended Olton schools. Laveta and Elmer moved to East Texas in 1966 and shortly thereafter moved to Trinidad, making it their home for nearly forty years. Laveta moved to Tyler in 2010 after Elmer’s death. Mrs. Phillips was an excellent seamstress and sewed for the public for many years. She was a wonderful cook and each Christmas she cooked special treats for all 39 of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved plants and flowers and enjoyed working in her yard. She was a member of Glenwood Church of Christ and loved the fellowship of her brothers and sisters in Christ. She truly loved her God, her family, and her country and will be missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be at the Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. The memorial service will be at Glenwood Church of Christ in Tyler at 10:00 AM with interment following at 1:00 PM at Trinidad City Cemetery in Trinidad, TX.
