Harold Magner,

Harold J. “Red” Magner, Jr. was born in Dallas, Texas on November 30th, 1918. He graduated from North Dallas High School in 1935 and from the University of Texas in Austin in 1940 with a BBA. During the summers of 1937 – 1939 he rough necked for Delta Drilling Co. in the oil fields near El Dorado, AR. He was drafted into the U. S. Army as of December 8, 1941 at the start of WWII, serving as a Captain in the 322nd infantry, 81st Division, Pacific Operation. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star after the surrender of Japan. Magner rejoined Delta Drilling Co. in 1946 and moved to Pittsburgh, Pa. as Eastern Division Manager and Vice President. Delta pioneered air-drilling techniques in the region with great economic success. Magner returned to Tyler, Texas in 1972 as Sr. Vice President serving in various capacities including exploration and production management and marketing of Delta’s oil and gas production. He was elected a Director of Delta and served until his retirement in 1982. Magner was involved in oil and gas organizations including President of the Eastern Division of the American Petroleum Institute, a Director of IPAA, a Director of the East Texas Salt Water Co. and a member of the original Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Commission. Locally, Magner was a Director and President of Willow Brook C.C. along with its men’s golf association. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and it’s finance committee, a Director of the Tyler Catholic School Foundation and a volunteer instructor for AARP’s tax counselors in the Tyler area. He was preceded in death by Jeannette “Bee” Magner, his wife of 54 years. In 1998 he married Ernestine Putnam. He is survived by Ernestine Magner, by daughters and sons-in-law Penny and Al Young of Richardson and Mary and Gerald Pavlas of Plano, grandchildren Deborah Young, Alfred Young, Jr., Elizabeth Johnson and Jane Pavlas and great grandchildren Tobias and Alexander Barrett. Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Thursday, July 29th, 2010 at 10:00 am with Monsignor Milam Joseph and Monsignor Joseph Strickland officiating. Entombment will be at Rose Hill Mausoleum. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 from 6:00-7:00 pm at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, in Tyler. A rosary will follow the visitation. Pallbearers will be Paul Walsh, Carroll Hudson, Monroe Mirsky, Bob Delk, Merrill Greenwell, Keating Zeppa, Travis McLane and Steve Duffey. Honorary pallbearers will be the Board of Directors of the Tyler Catholic School Foundation. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted to the Tyler Catholic School Foundation, P. O. Box 131175, Tyler, Texas 75713 or a charity of choice.
