Hugh Tomlinson

Services for Hugh C. "Tommy" Tomlinson, 89 of Tyler, will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2006 at 11:00 am at Marvin United Methodist Church with Dr. Robert Montgomery and Rev. Nona Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Tyler under direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mr. Tomlinson passed, Monday, August 14, 2006, in Tyler. He was born December 24, 1916 in Paris, TX to the late Hugh & Florence (Herman) Tomlinson. He was a member of the Marvin United Methodist Church in Tyler for many years. As a young child Tommy moved from Paris to Birthright in Hopkins County where he spent most of his youth. He then graduated high school in Sulphur Springs and went on to receive his Masters Degree from the East Texas State University. During his time at ETSU he met his wife Claudella and they were married shortly before he entered the United States Air Force in 1942, where he served four years as a navigational instructor. After his discharge, Tommy and Claudella moved to Cooper, TX where he taught vocational agriculture. In 1956, Mr. Tomlinson moved to Tyler where he taught for Tyler Independent School District for over 30 years with the majority of his time spent at John Tyler High School. During this time he received the certificate of Merit from TISD and was the Director of the Adult Evening Education program. Tommy also was honored with a scholarship fund created in his name that was established by the Cooperative Teachers Credit Union where he had also served as one of its board members. In addition to his educational career, Mr. Tomlinson enjoyed sharing his love of gospel music with his Sunday Morning Radio Program on KTBB for over 38 years. During this time he received the Gospel Music Broadcasting Award for 30 years of service. Tommy's last program was Sunday, August 13, 2006. Mr. Tomlinson had an active retirement where he taught at T.K. Gorman and served as principal at Rose Garden Academy in Tyler. He was also an active member of the East Texas Wood Workers Club. Tommy enjoyed spending holidays and special events with his family which was his first love. Tommy is survived by his loving family including wife of 64 years, Claudella (Grant) Tomlinson; daughter, Peggy McCaslin and husband Wayne of Richardson; grandson, Matt McCaslin and wife Shelly of Austin; great-grandchildren, Claire and Trevor McCaslin of Austin; special extended family, Carolyn and Edwin Bell of Fort Worth, Tracy and Dr. Drew Fielder and their children Zachary, Brandon, and Mamie of Austin, Mandy, David, and Audrey Patty of Fort Worth, Gary, Jan, Megan, and Gracie McCaslin of Abilene; sister, Ila Fae Murphy of Longview, sister, Joie England of Longview. Pallbearers will be Mike Edwards, Ed Stephenson, Cecil Hulsey, Bill Hardman, Jeff Taylor, Mike Hooper, Burrows Grant Taylor, Tilmon Deaton, and Tim Grant. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Hwy., Tyler, Texas 75703.
