James "Jim" Gill

Services for James “Jim” Tulley Gill, age 85, of Tyler, TX, will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Stewart Family Funeral Home Chapel with Steve Ditmore officiating. Burial with Military Funeral Honors will follow at Whitehouse Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mr. Gill passed away Sunday, May 13, 2018, at his home in Tyler. He was born January 26, 1933 in Jackson, Tennessee to Homer Lee and Inez Chapman Gill. Jim attended Humboldt HS then enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the Pacific Fleet Amphibious Force during the Korean War, and part of the Vietnam War, then the Severn River Naval Command, the Atlantic Fleet Amphibious Force, Caribbean Sea Frontier, Defense National Communication Control Center, Defense Communications Agency United Kingdom, and Atlantic Fleet Cruiser/Destroyer Force, retiring as Senior Chief in 1970 aboard the U.S.S. Charleston. He was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church since 1952, taught at Tyler Junior College, retiring as Master Teacher, and was the former President of the East Texas Korean War Veterans Association. Jim was preceded in death by his mother and father, brothers, Roderick and Jerry, sisters, Carolyn and Mary, and daughter, Vicki. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Gill; sons, Jimmy Gill and Chuck Florence; grandchildren, Michael Gill, Nicole Gill Schonacher, Meagan Florence Fulton, Lauren Florence, Ethan Florence, Jimi Elise; and great-grandchildren Greyson, Avery, and Sawyer Schonacher. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Howard, Chuck Florence, Michael Gill, Ethan Florence, Dennis Holland, and Bob Perry. Honorary pallbearers will be Tyler and Danny Trimmer, Jim Kirby, Earl Copeland, Tom Reavis, Jeffery Cunningham, Matt Schonacher, and Andrew Crawley. Visitation is scheduled from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018 at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, in Tyler.
