Joseph Holverson

Services for Joseph M. Holverson, 84, Tyler will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Stewart Baskin officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Tyler under direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mr. Holverson passed away, Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler. . He was born August 29, 1927 in Waco to Durie Clinton and Ruth Norton Holverson. Joe spent his childhood in Clifton. Joseph attended Austin Presbyterian Seminary and also received his Bachelors degree from Austin College in Sherman. He joined the US Navy in 1945 and served during the occupation of Japan. Joe moved to Tyler in 1952 and married DeLoris Gary Nix in 1961 at First Presbyterian Church in Tyler. He retired from Bank of America after a 38 year career. Early in his career, Joe was active in the Optimist Club. After retirement he was active with Kiwanis Club. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and served as a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church. Joe was also known for being quick with a good story and for wearing suspenders. He enjoyed watching football and westerns as well as playing tennis, fishing and a good ol’ game of 42. Joe loved helping others. He was full of honor and courage and held his faith in his Lord and Savior. Joe was a member of the Monday Bible Study Class. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, John Clinton Holverson and brother James Durie Holverson. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, DeLoris Gary Holverson; son, Joseph Gary Holverson and wife Kathleen of The Colony; grandchildren, Emily Ann Holverson and Jacob Matthew Holverson; sister-in-law Billie Holverson; nephew, John Holverson and by great nephew Cliff Holverson. Honorary Pallbearers will be John W. Holverson, Cliff Holverson, Chuck Goode, Jim Connally, John Simpson and Ron Martin. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00-7:00 PM, Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Hwy., in Tyler.
