Joy Gordon Rowe

Memorial services for Joy Gordon Rowe, 87, of Tyler, will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Stewart Family Funeral Home with Rev. David Luckenbach officiating. Visitation will be following the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Rowe passed away Monday, February 17, 2014 at The Hospice of East Texas. She was born November 6, 1926 in Shreveport, Louisiana to John Senter and Edna Winston Rust. Joy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tyler for over 50 years. She attended Bible study at Christ Episcopal Church for several years. Mrs. Rowe graduated from Byrd High School in Shreveport, from Baylor University in 1947 with a BS in Biology and from the University of Texas at Tyler in 1978 with a MS in Psychology. Joy worked as a licensed Counselor and Therapist for Psychiatrists, Drs. Baskin, McNeel and Wick in Tyler. She taught psychology courses at the University of Texas at Tyler. She was a former member of the Junior League of Tyler, the Symphony League, Festival Garden Club, Willow Brook Country Club, The Deck Club, and the Smith County Medical Society Alliance. Among the many things she enjoyed, her favorites were reading, music, traveling and playing Mah Jongg. Joy was aptly named, she was fun loving with a positive outlook, kind and compassionate with a great sense of humor that attracted a special set of friends. She was a wonderful role model for her children and will be missed dearly by her family and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rowe was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William E. Rowe; grandson, Adam Gordon and sister, Jackie McAuley. She is survived by her loving family including children, Gus Gordon, Emily Gabriel, Betty Anderson and husband Rowe, all of Tyler and their father, Tom Gordon, also of Tyler; grandchildren, Wade Gabriel and wife Beth of Austin, Carter Ann Gabriel, Winn and Haley Anderson, all of Tyler; great-grandchildren, Morgan Lewellen, Major Stephens, Ryder and Sam Gabriel: step-children, William E. Rowe IV and wife Linda of Houston, Janie Clapp and husband Matt of Red Springs, Mary Rowe Chilton and husband Chris of Ft. Worth; grandchildren, Catherine Crow, Travis Clapp and Thomas and Andrew Chilton; great-grandchildren, Iyler Ivy, Camp and Jane Crow; nephews, Mike and Scott McAuley; niece, Melissa McAuley Darlington and many beloved cousins.
