Marion Soules

Services for Marion Edward Soules, age 94, are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2011, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, Tyler, Texas, with Rev. Darryle Dunks officiating. Interment will follow at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler. Visitation will be on Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mr. Soules died September 15, 2011 at his home in Tyler, Texas. Ed Soules was born May 5, 1917 on the family ranch in Mills County, central Texas. He was the second of six children born to Luther Hugh and Blanche Harper Soules. At an early age the family moved to a small farm north of Goldthwaite, Texas, where he graduated from high school. He married Nettie Olla Thompson of Troup, the love of his life, on St. Patrick’s Day 1941. In 1942 his first son, Johnny Edward (John Sr.) was born. He served in the U.S. Army in North Africa and Italy during World War II. A year after his return, his wife presented him with twins, Richard Hugh and Trevelyn Sue. He was insurance claims manager for Gulf and Western Industries and travelled widely throughout the world. Mr. Soules is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Nettie Olla, and by their three children and spouses, John Sr. and Judy Soules of Tyler, Sue and Howard Patterson of Marshall, and Hugh and Kay Soules of Lindale. His extended family includes four grandchildren, Mark and Carren Soules of Austin, John Jr. and Sherri Soules of Bullard, Rebecca Jones of White Oak, and Matthew and Rachel Stricklin of Frisco. He loved and was loved by his great-grandchildren, Jennifer Soules of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Clair, Grant, and Jack Soules of Austin, Brendan Andrews and Alyssa Jones of White Oak, and Mary Payton and Laila Soules of Bullard. He is also survived by brothers, Fred and Mary Soules of Woodway, J.T. and Jean Soules of Cedartown, Georgia, John and Dorothy Soules of Sundown, sister Janet Frame of College Station, brothers-in-law James and Judy Thompson of Arp, and Larkey and Billie Sue Thompson of Tyler. Mr. Soules was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Luther Hugh II, brothers-in-law John Thompson and Bill Frame, sisters-in-law Merle Soules, Aileen Soules, Sybil Soules, and Jane Thompson, nephew Dallas Soules, and daughter-in-law Mary Carolyn Soules. Pallbearers will include grandchildren Mark Soules, John Soules, Rebecca Jones, and Matthew Stricklin, and nephews Joe Soules and Will Frame. Mr. Soules, known to family and friends as “Pop,” was a devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who had a passion for creating beauty from earth and seeds. He will be greatly missed by all. He and his family have been blessed to be the recipients of exceptional skill and kindness from many wonderful members of the Tyler healthcare community during his illness. They wish to extend special thanks to Dr. Michael Ashigbi, his nurse Andrea Thompson, the staff at Tyler Hematology and Oncology Clinic, Dr. Jeff Fidone and family, Dr. Shawn Pierce, Dr. David Dick, and Dr. Luis Destarac.
