Mary Anne McCain

Mary Anne Nenney McCain passed away peacefully and into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, June 23, 2017. She was also welcomed with the brightest smile by her beloved husband, James Thomas McCain, who predeceased her five months ago. Mary Anne was also preceded in death by her daughter, Frances Anne McCain and her parents Louise and Francis Nenney. She is survived by three sons, James Thomas McCain Jr. and wife Chaley, Elbert John McCain and William Loftin McCain; grandchildren, Elizabeth Calhoun McCain, James Thomas McCain III and wife Ashley, Charles Clayton McCain and wife Blythe; and six great-grandchildren, Louise Corwin McCain, James Thomas McCain IV, Cecilia Frances McCain, Eliza Mae McCain, Charles Loggins McCain, and Thomas Mac McCain. She is also survived by cousins, Henry Bell III, Allen Bell and wife Cindy, Jane Green and husband Joe Max; nephew, Jack Skeen and wife Barbara as well as nieces, Ginger Vance, Ann Lilly and husband Roy. Mary Anne was born on August 6, 1927 in Tyler and attended Gary and Hogg Schools. She attended Tyler High School where she graduated in 1944. During her school years, Mary Anne would spend summers on the Guadalupe at her favorite place in the world, Camp Waldemar. She never missed a camp closing for her daughter or granddaughter. Her great-granddaughter Louise attended camp this year and Mary Anne’s comment was, “I wish I could get in your trunk and go back to camp.” Upon graduation from high school, she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and completed her liberal arts degree. She then entered the University of Texas where she became a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. In 2013, she received her 65-year pin from the organization. Mary Anne served as Rose Queen of the Texas Rose Festival in 1948 and she remained active in the Rose Festival for all of her adult life. She was a lifetime member of Christ Episcopal Church where she served many years on the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Junior League of Tyler and The Gertrude Windsor Garden Club. After graduation from the University of Texas, she returned to Tyler and married James McCain, the love of her life, on June 25, 1949. They would have shared their 68th anniversary this year. They built a home together filled with love as they raised a family of four children. Mary Anne was a devoted mother and friend and will be remembered best by her sweet nature and loving smile, as well as her great faith in trusting the Lord through life’s many challenges. A celebration of Mary Anne’s life will be at 3:00 PM on Monday, June 26th at Christ Episcopal Church, the visitation will follow. A private graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Breslford, Harry Caserta, John Diebel, Raymond Hedge, Jack King, King Ramey, Tom Ramey, Whit Riter, Elam Swann, Chris Woldert, Tom Woldert and James Wynne.
