Norma Adelman

Norma Rabinowitz Adelman (January 12 1930 – April 19 2017) Norma Rabinowitz Adelman was born in Brooklyn on 12 January 1930 to Isadore "Izzy" Rabinowitz and Jenny Cutlarski. Both her parents were immigrants from the Ukraine; Izzy came to the US to avoid conscription in the Czar's army. He was an iron worker and Jenny worked at a hat factory. Norma had two older sisters, Mary and Rose, as well as an older brother Leon. The family lived in a tenement, where Norma shared a bedroom with her sisters. Later the family moved to the Bronx because it was "more country-like" and the "air is better'. Norma did well at school, but had to go straight to work after high school. She found a job as a secretary while attending night school at City College in Manhattan. There she met Stanley Adelman at a college dance. He was a WWII veteran studying on the GI Bill, which funded education for ex-servicemen. They married in 1951 and Stanley began working for the Department of Defense as a pyrotechnical engineer at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover NJ. Norma gave birth to four children, Robert, Rosanne, Carol and Alan. She later observed: “When you have four children and each is different, it gets complicated!” She always did her best for her family. The young family moved to Randolph NJ in 1965 to be closer to Stanley's work. Norma went back to work as a secretary at the Girl Scouts in Morristown and later at Allied Chemical in Florham Park. They were active members of the Hebrew Congregation of Mt Freedom and avid tennis players. In the 1990s the Adelman’s moved to Greenbriar, a retirement community in Marlboro NJ. Stanley wrote a column in the Greenbriar newspaper, where Norma regularly appeared as "the toast" of Marlboro. In 2010 they moved to the Dallas area to be near their eldest son. They later lived in Tyler and eventually moved to the Cedar Lake Nursing Home in Malakoff. There Norma's beloved husband of 65 years died on 8 September 2016. Norma followed Stanley on 19 April 2017. She is survived by her four children, her granddaughter Raina and great-granddaughter Claire. She will also be missed by her nieces and nephews and their children. The funeral will take place 1:00 PM on Monday 24 April at the Dallas Ft. Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
