Services for Sammy Paul Chance, 74, of Bullard, will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Stewart Family Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Paul Powell officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Cemetery in Upshur County at 3:00 PM under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mr. Chance passed away January 23, 2012 at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. He was born July 21, 1937 in Detroit to G.W. and Pauline Louise Toney Chance. Paul was a graduate of Sulphur Springs High School. He worked in men’s clothing stores in Gilmer, Pittsburg and Richardson. In 1966, Paul opened Penick & Chance and operated it for the next 46 years as well as Paul’s Big & Tall. Paul was a member of First Baptist Church Tyler. He also served as past President of the Rose City Kiwanis Club and past Kiwanis Lt. Governor. Paul served on the Bullard Community Library Board and was a charter member of Crime Stoppers. Paul was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. He had a love for life and people which was reflected in his smile and genuine kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother C.W. Chance; sister, Virginia Shaw; nephews, Martin Chance, Paul Ray Rice and niece D’Anna Chance. Paul is survived by his loving family including his wife of 51 years, Judy Kay Chance of Bullard; daughter, Julie Simms (Gary) of Tyler; son John Chance (Jennifer Cook) of Tyler; brothers, Tony Chance (Patti), Gene Chance (Carol), Bill Chance (Crista), and Bobby Chance (Dot); sisters, Sue Chance (Richard), Melba Hopkins, and Christine Smith; grandchildren, Katie and Alex Simms of Tyler; aunt Evelyn Smith; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Young, Jerry Smith, Dale Hamblett, Tom Lyles, Robert Rouse, Jerry Parker, Stuart Chesley and J. Mike Rowan. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 –6:30 PM on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, in Tyler.
