Thomas Howard Alexander M.D.

Services for Thomas Howard Alexander, MD, 85, of Flint will be held on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Green Acres Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Rev. David Dykes and Dr. Rev. Paul Powell officiating. Visitation will follow the service in the parlor, under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Dr. Alexander died on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 in Tyler. He was born May 6, 1930 in Kennedy to Thomas Howard, Sr. and Mildred Zenovia Veale Alexander. At the age of 9 months his family moved to Houston, where they lived until he was 9 years old. Moving to Karnes City where he attended Karnes High School, staying an extra year to play quarterback for the Karnes City Badgers. Thomas then attended the University of Texas in Austin School of Pharmacy, UTMB at Galveston and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society his junior year and graduated in 1955. He married Joann Heinroth while in Galveston in 1953 and had three sons, Howie, Tim and Calvin. He joined the Air Force in 1955 and did his internship at Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii. Thomas did his Internal Medicine residence at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver from 1956 to 1959. He served as Chief of Medicine at Shepherd Air Force Base Hospital in Wichita Falls, was Chief of the Internal Medicine Section at the Air Training Command Headquarters at Randolph Air Force Base and was honorably discharged from the U. S. Air Force in September of 1963. He then moved to Tyler to begin clinical practice with his brother, Dr. Joe Jones Thomas was President of the SCMS, a member of the medical staff of Trinity Mother Frances and East Texas Medical Center since 1962, President of the ETMC staff, Chairman of By-laws Commission at ETMC since 1990, Chairman of the Grievance Commission of SCMS member since 1968. Thomas was a long time faithful member of Green Acres Baptist Church loved singing in the Celebration choir, under the direction of Mike Parks. Among the many things he enjoyed, some of his favorites were his Wednesday and Saturday foursome golf with Drs. Herd Snider, Joe Prudhomme and Pat Thomas since 1971, notoriously known as the “fab four”. He loved gardening, growing cantaloupes, one of which weighed 23 pounds and was displayed in Brookshire’s Grocery store on Rice Rd. He is survived by his loving family including his wife of 46 years, Linda Perry Alexander; sons, Thomas Howard Alexander, Jr. and wife Rhonda of Tyler, Timothy Frank Alexander and wife Sheryl of Tyler and Calvin Driver Alexander and wife Katherine of Shreveport, La.; daughter, Staci Brooke Alexander of Dallas; step-daughters, Sonya Jane Hamilton of Tyler, Tonya Jo Reynolds and husband Dewayne of Lake Palestine; step-son, Gregory Powell and wife Tammy of Chandler; 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 2 sisters-in-law, Charlotte Morris and June Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Herd Snider, Dr. Joe Prudhomme, Dr. Pat Thomas, Dr. John Walker, Dr. Dick Knarr, Dr. Jon Schreiber, Dr. Bob Gatti, Dr. Lester Collins and Dr. Gene Earl. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George, Harold and Joe Jones and sister, Mildred Walker.
