Becky Helms

Rebecca Irene Helms (Northcutt), gracious friend, loving mother and adoring grandmother, went to be with the Lord January 3rd, 2021. Lovingly referred to by her many grandchildren as Gramsy, Becky lived her life with love and joy, always caring for others. Born in Tyler, Texas August 12, 1951 to Irene and W.B. Northcutt, Becky was raised outside Jacksonville, Texas. An only child, she was doted upon by her loving parents. She attended Jacksonville High School where she was a majorette in the school's band. After graduating in 1969, Becky continued that love for performing as a member of the world-famous Tyler Junior College Apache Belles. Becky then pursued her teaching degree from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas where she was both the lead majorette and a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Her love for teaching and helping others would prove long lasting. In 2018 she retired, completing a 35 year career as a schoolteacher, affecting many thousands of children’s lives in East Texas. Teaching children was truly her passion. After retiring, and looking for a new challenge, Becky was able to fulfill her goal of becoming a real estate agent. She jumped headfirst into this new adventure, building relationships with clients, and developing new friends in the profession. Her family looked on in pride as she stepped outside her comfort zone and became successful in this new career. Becky’s other passion in life was her family. Raising her children Julie and J.J., she never missed an event or game, always being the supportive parent. That love grew even larger as her grandchildren began to come along. Whether a dance recital, school event, ballgame or birthday, Gramsy was always there. The true joy her grandchildren’s lives brought to her will never be forgotten. Becky was an active member of Dayspring United Methodist Church in Tyler, acting as a greeter on most Sunday mornings never wanting anyone to go unnoticed. She was also part of their community outreach team, bringing others closer to the church and Christ. Becky is preceded in death by her parents, Irene and W.B. Northcutt. She will forever be remembered by her children, Julie and husband Chris Gibson and their two children Claire and Carter, her son, J.J. his wife Tori VanderPoel and J. J’s children, Chandler Grace, Jett and Tripp VanderPoel. In life, there are far too few people who offer love unconditionally, Gramsy was one of those people. She will forever be in our hearts.
