A Requiem Mass for Daniel Marcus Pierce, Jr., 77, of Tyler will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 4:00 PM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler with Monsignor Joseph Strickland officiating. A rosary will be recited prior to the funeral mass at 3:30 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler. Mr. Pierce passed away on March 23, 2009 at HomePlace Hospice of East Texas in Tyler. He was born on March 12, 1932 in Glassboro, New Jersey to the late Daniel Marcus Pierce Sr. and Winifred Haines Pierce. He graduated from Bishop Toolen High School in Mobile, Alabama where he played football. Mr. Pierce served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He attended Texas Tech University where he studied agriculture and pre-veterinary science. While in school, he was employed by the Sheriff’s Department in Lubbock. He later worked as a police officer and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Mr. Pierce was a master pistol marksman and taught firearms at Smith and Wesson in Springfield, Massachusetts. He loved a good cigar. Mr. Pierce had a love for horses, was a member of the Horsemen’s Association, and was a thoroughbred horse trainer for 50 years. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler where he sang in the Cathedral Choir. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pierce was preceded in death by a brother, Scott Pierce, a sister-in-law, Joanne Pierce and a nephew, Clay Pierce. He is survived by a loving family including his wife of 40 years, Jennie Pierce of Tyler; sons, Michael Andrew Pierce and wife Shona of Birmingham, Alabama, Marcus Stanley Pierce of Tyler, and Matthew Damian Pierce and wife Jennifer Browning of Tyler; grandchildren, Connor Addison, Gavin Ryder, Bethany, Stormy, Aaron, and Brittany Nichole; brother, Robert Pierce of Middletown, Delaware; sister-in-law, Ginger Pierce, also of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews.
