Obituary for David Wayne Bates Services for David Wayne Bates, 56, of Tyler, Texas, will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler with Dr. David O. Dykes officiating. Burial will follow at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. David passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024, in Tyler, Texas. He was born on October 8, 1967, in Dallas to Dowell Wayne Bates and Mary Bates. David was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and found strength and guidance through his faith. He was an active member of Green Acres Baptist Church, where his faith was nurtured and his spirit uplifted. His belief in Christ fueled his actions and shaped his character, evident in his unwavering commitment to serving others. A graduate of Grand Saline High School in 1986, David pursued further education at Tyler Junior College attaining his degree in Fire Protection followed by completion of Kilgore College Fire Academy, where he laid the groundwork for his distinguished career in firefighting. His commitment to service was unparalleled. David began his career in the fire service in 1989 at Kilgore Fire Department. In 1991 he began what would be a 30-year career at Longview Fire Department. Throughout his tenure, he ascended the ranks, showcasing his leadership and dedication. Serving as assistant Fire Chief of Operations for the last decade of his career, David left an indelible mark on the department and the community it served. Above all, his passion for his brotherhood fueled his love for the fire service. David's contributions were widely recognized, receiving accolades such as the Firefighter of the Year award in 2004 and the Lieutenant’s Award in 2006. His pursuit of excellence led him to complete the fire service Chief Executive Officer Program at Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service in 2018. Upon his retirement from the fire service in 2020, David embraced a new venture, founding Bates Property Inspections. His entrepreneurial spirit thrived as he built his business and forged lasting connections within the community. Yet, beyond his professional achievements, David's true passion lay with his family. He embodied sacrificial love, prioritizing their well-being above all else. A devoted husband and loving father, David cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. David was preceded in death by his father, Dowell Bates. He is survived by his beloved family including his wife of 33 years, Kimberly Bates; daughter, Brooke Bates; son, Kelby Bates and wife Emily; granddaughter, Sunny; mother, Mary Bates; sister, Stacey Collum; and numerous extended family members. Pallbearers honoring David's memory will be Jon Eric Johnson, Gareth Juays, Michael McNatt, Andy Parker, Steve Green, Kolby Beckham, David (DK) Smith, and Cory Crowell. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, located at 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler.
