A memorial service for E. Rowland Baldwin, Jr., 80, of Tyler, will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Southside Baptist Church. Burial will precede the service at 9:30AM at Rose Hill Cemetery . Mr. Baldwin passed away Thursday, July 28, 2011 at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler. Earnest Rowland Baldwin, Jr., son of the late E. Rowland Baldwin Sr. and Grace Hodges Baldwin, was born in Tyler on April 5, 1931. He was a fourth generation resident of Smith County and was married to Joanna Gentry Baldwin, his wife of 54 years. He graduated from Tyler Junior College and attended the school of Business Administration at the University of Texas at Austin. During the Korean War, he served in the army and attained the rank of Sergeant. He was a business manager of the Swann Estate from 1960 to 1990. During this time, he served on the Campfire Board and was active in the Scouting program at First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He helped establish a foster home sponsored by First Presbyterian Church in conjunction with St. James C.M.E. In 1985, Mr. Baldwin became a member and deacon of Green Acres Baptist Church where he became active in the missions program, traveling and leading mission teams to Belize, Germany, and Ecuador. In 1991, he and Joanna were commissioned by the Baptist International Mission Board for foreign service, which included caring for and assisting teams to build churches and carry out ministries in Guatemala. Their service there was interrupted when he suffered a stroke in 1995. His last service as a church officer was Deacon in Aposento Alto Iglesia Bautista in Guatemala City. At the time of his death, Mr. Baldwin was active in Southside Baptist Church, where he served as an honorary member of the Evangelism Committee and as a prayer warrior. He was an inspiration to all in his zeal for worshipping the Lord, although heavily disabled. Mr. Baldwin loved to travel and being outside in the country, fishing, hunting and camping. He loved working with his hands, using wood, glass and metal. In view of his many interest, he had been called a true modern “Renaissance Man”. He will be truly missed. Mr. Baldwin is survived by a daughter, Ellen Graham and husband, Greg of Amarillo; son, Rowland Baldwin, III of Austin; first cousins, Thomas R. Swann and wife Frances of Tyler, Cherry Swann of Tyler and Beth Gwinn and husband Howell of Beaumont, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Baldwin was preceded in death by first cousin, Franklin Swann. Visitation is scheduled from 6:00 – 7:30 PM on Friday, July 29 at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Hwy., in Tyler. Memorials in honor of E. Rowland Baldwin, Jr. may be given to the Mission or Building Fund at Southside Baptist Church, 8875 Old Jacksonville Hwy., Tyler, Texas 75702.
