Edna Joan Mitchell

Services for Edna “Joan” Mitchell, 77, of Flint, will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 9:30 AM at Stewart Family Funeral Home with Brother Sam DeVille, Pastor of Flint Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Flint Cemetery in Flint under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mrs. Mitchell passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at The Hospice of East Texas in Tyler. She was born October 18, 1935 in Foreman, Arkansas to Arvel and Clemmie Abney Dawson. Joan graduated in 1953 as Valedictorian of her class from Diamond Hill Jarvis High School in Ft. Worth. Soon after graduation she began a family with her husband of 60 years, L. G. Mitchell. They raised two sons, Glenn and Jeff and had the pleasure of two grandchildren, Kara and Chris. In addition to raising a family, she had a full working career and retired from Trane in 1998. She was an avid sports fan with baseball being her favorite. Having grown up playing slow-pitch softball, she never lost the love for the sport. She never missed a Ranger game unless she had to be at church. Mrs. Mitchell was a long-time active member of Flint Baptist Church where she has been a shining light and living example to all who have had the privilege to know her. Joan was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving family including her husband of 60 years, L.G. Mitchell of Flint; sons, Jeffery Eugene Mitchell and wife Mickey of Austin and Glenn Stewart Mitchell of Flint; grandchildren, Kara Palomo and husband Nick of Pearland and Christian Mitchell of Corpus Christi and sister, Inez Lewis of Gordonville. Pallbearers will be Bob Ozment, Dan Moore, David Frederick, John Stokes, Nick Palomo and Marvin Snodgrass. Honorary pallbearers will be Grady Grove and Chris Rinehart. Visitation is scheduled from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, in Tyler.
