Michael Connor

Michael Connor of Tyler, Texas and formerly of College Station, Texas passed away on May 11, 2018 after a brave battle with lung cancer, outliving the initial prognosis by 5 years. Husband to Ann; father and father-in-law to Diane & Bob Durden, Lisa & Kevin Conway and Tracey & Sammy Jackson; grandfather to two Brittanys, Danielle, Trevor, Colton and Connor and great-grandfather to Emma, Brooklyn, Colbie and Aubree; brother to eight siblings and friend to many, Mike was a larger than life figure to all who knew him. Fondly known as “The Voice” because of his on-air radio personality and roles as announcer at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania and Texas World Speedway along with his ministry as lector at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul and St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, Mike’s talents uniquely touched anyone within the sound of his voice. He was a born storyteller, whether it was to a radio audience of thousands, creating videos or sitting on the sofa with family and friends...no one could tell a story better than Mike. Born in 1934, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Mike exhibited early on a talent for illustrating and painting, as well as a love of radio, music, trains and baseball – a sport he would eventually excel in enough to play in the semi-pro leagues. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Mike turned his attention to his true passion of radio broadcasting and a career was born. From a small, radio station in Oneida, New York, where he met his wife, Ann of 57 years, to the afternoon-drive at WDEL in Wilmington, Delaware during the early radio years to later hosting his own on-air programs in College Station and Tyler, he was never more on his game than when he was in front of a microphone. His booming voice lulled listeners into a love of old and new classics from Sinatra to Big Band to Buble´ and beyond for over six decades. A natural born Yankee, this Texas transplant grew to love Aggie sports, Texas railroads and tooling around the Lone Star State highways in his red Miata with Ann by his side. Mike was truly one of a kind and the kind of man this world won’t see again. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home in Tyler, followed by a Rosary. A Requiem Mass will take place on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary Magdelene Catholic Church in Flint, Texas.
